the velveteen rabbit

Post aviation memo submission, I decided to reward myself for a few hours so I spent the rest of the day watching Greys and on tumblr and chanced upon the quote below. I ended up listening to Meryl Streep’s narration of the whole story (for the first time) on Youtube and I love it ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€œDoes it hurt?โ€ asked the Rabbit.

โ€œSometimes,โ€ said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. โ€œWhen you are Real you donโ€™t mind being hurt.โ€

โ€œDoes it happen all at once, like being wound up,โ€ he asked, โ€œor bit by bit?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t happen all at once,โ€ said the Skin Horse. โ€œYou become. It takes a long time. Thatโ€™s why it doesnโ€™t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things donโ€™t matter at all, because once you are Real you canโ€™t be ugly, except to people who donโ€™t understand.โ€
